How Treating Varicose Veins May Also Cure Restless Leg Syndrome

Do you ever feel an irresistible urge to move your legs, or have you noticed tingly, throbby, or pulling sensations? If so, you may be suffering from restless leg syndrome (RLS), a condition that affects roughly 10 percent of Americans. Of those people, approximately one in four also experience pain from varicose veins. While the coupling of these conditions and their perspective symptoms may become frustrating to live with, there are solutions that can help. In a perplexing yet convenient turn, 98 percent of patients who had their varicose veins removed also experienced a relief of their RLS symptoms.

There a several health issues or deficiencies that can contribute to RLS, and sometimes it’s difficult to find the root cause to treat, but the correlation between varicose veins and RLS is consistently seen in our practice. Many patients report they have no pain with their varicose veins, but then go on to complain about cramps, RLS, itching, and heaviness. All of these are uncomfortable sensations that impact your daily life and activity. That’s the real harm! Sleepless nights, inability to exercise at the end of day, feeling like your legs are heavy in the evening as you stand trying to make your family a meal. Over time the impact adds up and makes one’s quality of life less. If you’re one of the millions of Americans suffering from RLS, check to see if you also have leg swelling, skin color changes or varicose veins in your legs. These visual cues paired with subtle symptoms like dull aching, itching, heaviness, and throbbing when sitting or standing for long periods of time, are all signs that could indicate venous circulation issues. Diagnosis is simple with an ultrasound and if treatment is recommended, that’s also pretty simple. Treatments are done in the office in about 30 minutes. You can drive to and from the appointment and get back to normal activity right away. Most insurances, including Medicare and Medicaid, cover treatments when medically indicated. There’s really nothing to lose except the annoying symptoms of RLS.
