What is microphlebectomy?

Microphlebectomy is an in-office procedure for treatment of larger varicose veins that do not always regress after sealing the refluxing trunk vein closed. These veins can continue to cause pain, heaviness and fatigue in your legs and they increase the risk for blood clot formation (thrombophlebitis). Large varicose vein branches can also negatively impact previously performed treatments.

How does it work?

The veins are identified and marked on the skin surface. The area along the remaining bulging veins is numbed with local anesthesia and then tiny nicks are made in the skin adjacent to the targeted vein. Using special small instruments, the unhealthy bulging veins are gently removed. Stitches are not required.

What should I expect after the procedure?

Microphlebectomy is much gentler than previous vein treatment methods and it leads to very high patient satisfaction with almost no downtime. Patients drive themselves home, work the next day and are back to full exercise by day four. Some bruising and tiny scabs disappear quickly after the phlebectomy. Within weeks your legs will look and feel younger and healthier without scarring. Most patients report not needing pain medication. Some patients take an over-the-counter pain reliever as a precaution.

Why Capitol Vein & Laser Centers?

Microphlebectomy is best performed by a surgeon. Drs. McNeill and Rosenberg are board-certified vascular surgeons with careers-long experience in such procedures. They have perfected their phlebectomy technique and have lectured and instructed physicians in their method. Some vein centers cannot offer an expert approach to phlebectomy due to lack of a surgery background. Phlebectomy is the most effective way to eliminate varicose veins after the leaking trunk is sealed closed. Sclerotherapy of large veins is less effective and often leads to skin pigmentation.
